Take Action: Tell Iran to Free Siamak and Baquer Namazi
Urge Iran to Free Siamak and Baquer Namazi!
Update: On July 12, Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced S.Res. 529, a bipartisan resolution calling on Iran to immediately release Siamak and Baquer Namazi. The House Foreign Affairs Committee also passed the Royce-Connolly resolution (H.Res. 808) out of committee on Thursday. It is likely to receive a vote after the summer recess. Take action below to encourage your Senators and Representative to support these important resolutions.
Two Iranian Americans who we know well are wrongfully imprisoned in Iran and need your help. Siamak Namazi and his father, Baquer Namazi, have been detained in Iran for months. Iranian authorities have not made the charges against Siamak public, while no formal charges appear to have been presented against Baquer.
Siamak Namazi, a dual citizen and Iranian-American businessman and academic, was in Tehran last summer when his passport was confiscated and he was later arrested. He has been held in Evin Prison since October 2015, and was unfortunately not among the five imprisoned Americans freed in January. In February 2016, his 80-year-old father, Baquer Namazi, returned to Iran and was imprisoned as well. Baquer suffers from a heart condition and the family is worried about his condition.
Baquer is a former official of the United Nations Children’s Fund. Siamak worked to stop sanctions from blocking medicine for ordinary Iranians. Both of them have worked for a brighter future for the Iranian and American people, and now they need our help.
In an effort to redouble U.S. efforts to secure their release, legislators in the House and Senate have introduced bipartisan resolutions calling on Iran to immediately release Siamak and Baquer Namazi. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) introduced H. Res. 808 and passed it through committee, potentially setting up a vote after the summer recess. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced S.Res 529 this week.
These resolutions are an important call to intensify the effort to secure the Namazis’ release, and it needs your support.
Tell your Congressman to support the Royce-Connolly and Booker-Hatch resolutions seeking freedom for the Namazis today.
The next few months could represent the best opportunity to use our renewed diplomatic channels with Iran to secure the Namazis’ release. Speaking out is the only way to create urgency in Washington to resolve the case. Please take action in support of Siamak and Baquer today.
