Pompeo Approved in Committee

Washington, DC – NIAC Action Executive Director Jamal Abdi released the following statement regarding the Senate Foreign Relations Committee’s favorable vote for Mike Pompeo’s nomination for Secretary of State:

The Senate may have just blown its last chance to stop Trump from exiting the Iran deal and the catastrophe that will follow. Rather than act as a check against Trump and a dangerous new Middle East escalation, these Senators are granting the President a war cabinet.

“The first consequence of Pompeo becoming Secretary of State will likely be a U.S. decision to exit the Iran deal on May 12. This could set of a chain reaction of events that Pompeo, Bolton and Trump may attempt to exploit and will very likely mishandle dangerously.

“We are disappointed that Senate Democratic leadership did not actively oppose this nomination and some Democrats up for reelection in red states decided to support Pompeo. We are also disappointed Rand Paul decided to flip his vote from NO to YES, giving Pompeo a clear path to securing the nomination. They better do more than hope that Trump and his new war cabinet do not drag us into a military adventure.

“It is delusional to believe that a President who has chosen John Bolton as his National Security Advisor and Mike Pompeo as his Secretary of State is gearing up to end wars rather than start new ones. It is easy to say you are against war and Iraq-style regime change, but Pompeo’s record speaks for itself.

“It will fall on voters to reign in Trump and make clear to Congress that the American people will not abide another war of choice.”
